Causes and Development of Spinal Stenosis

A variety of factors can contribute to spinal stenosis. Degenerative changes in the spine as we age, as well as the subsequent transition to its structure and structural integrity, are the most common causes of spinal stenosis. As a result, those who experience chronic pain or injuries from sports or lifting heavy objects during their tender years are more likely to develop spinal arthritis sooner than expected.

Although not limited to aging, injuries such as falls/trips or vehicular collisions that negatively affect discs can cause tissue breakdown and lead to Spinal Stenosis pathology. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of Spinal Stenosis because chronic inflammation can cause soft tissue destruction.

Other conditions that cause spinal compression and may contribute to Spinal Stenosis are as follows:

-Paget's Disease
-Tumors (benign or cancerous)
-Herniated or Nonherniated Disc Protrusions
-Congenital Canal Stenosis
-Epidural Lipomatosis
